On December 29, 1990, in blowing snow and wind-chill temperatures around 50 degrees below zero, more than 350 mounted riders approached Wounded Knee, South Dakota to observe the end of seven generations of mourning on the centennial of the historic massacre there.

Two copies of this image are in the permanennt collection of the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of the American Indian.

The Centennial Ride to Wounded Knee On December 29, 1990, in blowing snow and wind-chill temperatures around fifty degrees below zero, more than 350 mounted riders approached Wounded Knee, South Dakota to observe the end of seven generations of mourning on the centennial of the historic massacre there. The riders had retraced the path of Big Foot and his people on the seven day ride. As they rode over the last few hills, the frozen horses and riders took on a timeless and ghostly appearance as if they were indeed riding in from the past. The suffering that all experienced from the cold that day seemed that much more appropriate in remembering the results of one culture failing to understand another.

Winter's Assault on Lake Michigan The bitter winds of January turn Lake Michigan against itself, as waves bearing frozen balls of ice and slush crash onto the growing ice shelf.

The Frozen Surface of Lake Michigan Throughout the winter sizable mounds of ice and snow accumulate across the surface of the Lake. In the distance, open water sloshes against the ice shelf ready to create new ice formations when the next storm strikes.

January Pre-dawn, Pier Cove As daylight approaches; from between waves already frozen into ice and distant icebergs, steam rises off the frigid, remaining open water into the even colder air .

Old Growth Forest, Brandarsaig, Isle of Skye It required a bit of belly crawling to find my way into this thicket of ancient pines on the slopes of Beinn na Moine of the Duirinish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. A determined shaft of sunlight managed to pierce the tightly packed trees to the carpet of pine needles below; the depth of which could only be imagined. An eerie sense of undisturbed history pervaded the area.

Autumn Rain in the Forest As the rain lets up on an autumn day in Saugatuck Dunes State Park, a momentary brightening of the clouds serves to deepen the contrast between the changing leaves and the wet tree trunks. The dunes forest consists of beech, white and red oaks, maple and sassafras trees.

Winter in Saugatuck Dunes Laid bare in winter, the forest reveals the lesser but still formidable dunes throughout Saugatuck Dunes State Park. A fresh snowfall hides the footprints of all resident creatures leaving only trails of tree trunks, sunlight and shadow.

Taking the Plunge In a moment of youthful abandon, two boys leap from a Florida Keys bridge into the timeless sea below.

A large white steamship named SS Keewatin with a yellow and red funnel is being towed by a red and black tugboat along the Kalamazoo River in Saugatuck, Michigan, surrounded by green trees, in drizzling rain. In the foreground, a person in a small inflatable boat with an umbrella photographs the scene as the ship navigates its last curve toward Lake Michigan.

Departure of the Keewatin In a drizzling rain and with tugboats at each end, the SS Keewatin is backed around the last curve of the Kalamazoo River and out to Lake Michigan. After 45 years as a local museum and landmark, the Edwardian steamship was returning to her original home port, Port McNicoll, Ontario. Some were compelled to follow, however they could, for a last possible look.

Kat's Moon I was pulled out of bed before dawn one morning in order to pursue an image of the full moon setting over Lake Michigan. The name of the print gives credit where credit is due.
