The Sun Sets on "The Denison" The setting sun casts a pink glow on the property known for over fifty years as 'The Denison.' An Endangered Historic Place, it comprises the last undeveloped, navigable river mouth on Lake Michigan, Indian burial grounds and the ruins of the town of Singapore. Development divides communities challenging the values and priorities of each of us. If developers prevail, it will mark the end of an era. The sun may, indeed... be setting on 'The Denison.'

Oxbow Lagoon, Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area As summer wanes, a Mute Swan patrols its home on Oxbow Lagoon. The phrase 'swan song' refers to this particular type of swan. The legend says these swans are utterly silent all of their lives until the last moment. And then, just before dying, they sing out one achingly beautiful song. In reality, Mute Swans are not completely silent. Mute swans are found in the central Great Lakes Region, predominantly in Western and Upper Michigan. At 26 pounds, they are very big birds with a wing span reaching 8 feet; and are supposedly strong enough to break a man's arm. They are not a native species, but were transported to North America in the late nineteenth century by European immigrants.

Autumn Rain in the Forest As the rain lets up on an autumn day in Saugatuck Dunes State Park, a momentary brightening of the clouds serves to deepen the contrast between the changing leaves and the wet tree trunks. The dunes forest consists of beech, white and red oaks, maple and sassafras trees.

Autumn in Singapore Where the town of Singapore once prospered alongside the mouth of the Kalamazoo River, only dunes and trees now stand.

North Trail, Saugatuck Dunes State Park The North Trail in Saugatuck Dunes State Park cuts across the ridge line of a forested dune. Leaves that once blocked the sun now become the forest's carpet, striped with the shadows of the trees that dropped them.

White Pine on Oxbow Lagoon One of the remaining majestic White Pines. Native Americans called these giants 'whispering pines.' White Pine once dominated our woods and allowed the heyday of the lumber industry. Within 20 years, from 1870 to 1890, most were cut. Michigan lumber helped build this country, but the trees are now gone. With respect for their role in history, White Pine is designated Michigan's state tree.
